Vincent van Gogh started his artistic career as a draughtsman in 1880. In the letters addressed to his brother Theo, he included many sketches. Now and then Vincent sent along sketches from the things he had seen in his daily life. Eventually, this led to an important turning point in his life: Theo advised him to concentrate more on his drawing.
Van Gogh’s oeuvre of drawings is extensive and includes many studies from impressive landscapes, portraits and city views in pencil, pastel and reed pen.
