During his stay at the psychiatric hospital at Saint-Rémy, Vincent once again suffered a mental breakdown in the spring of 1890. During his recovery he sought comfort in painting flower still lifes. Van Gogh experimented with striking colour combinations, as in this bouquet of irises. The dark purple flowers are placed against a bright yellow background. The dark contour lines are reminiscent of Japanese woodcuts.
