In 1886 Van Gogh discovered a print by the Japanese artist Kesai Eisen on the cover of the French magazine Paris Illustré. Employing transparent paper he made a tracing of this image of a courtesan, using the drawing as a basis for the painting. Surrounding the Japanese lady in her decorative robes is a framework of water, reeds and water lilies. Reproduction on linen on a wooden stretcher.
