In October 1888 Van Gogh painted this picture of his bedroom in 'The Yellow House', ‘the walls seem lavender, the floor broken and pale red, the chairs and the bed chrome yellow, the pillows and sheets very pale green-yellow, the blanket blood red, the dressing table orange, the washbasin blue, the window green.’ The artist sought to express a sense of ‘absolute rest’ with these patches of colour without shadow. Reproduction on linen on a wooden stretcher.
