In Provence Van Gogh made a series of paintings around the theme ‘summer.’ He drew his inspiration from the plateau of La Crau, near Arles. He depicted the fields and the farm workers just as he saw them, under the blazing sun. In the background is the ruin of the abbey of Montmajour, where Van Gogh also worked in the summer.
