When his nephew and namesake Vincent Willem was born in 1890, Van Gogh painted a picture for him. To symbolise the new life he chose the early spring blossom of the almond tree. It was ‘a large sky-blue canvas against which blossoming branches are set’. Later, his sister-in-law Johanna wrote that her young son was fascinated by his Uncle Vincent’s painting, especially ‘the blossoming tree that hangs above our bed’. This Van Gogh Museum poster shows a larger-than-life detail from Vincent’s Almond Blossom.
