In Provence, Van Gogh was seeking something more than just color and warmth: he hoped to encounter subjects in a 'Japanese' atmosphere. He discovered this in the orchards around Arles. During the month of April he painted the flowering fruit trees with full abandon. Together, the paintings were to form a series representing spring. This work's decorative style, with the elegant tree, the high vantage point and the absence of depth is clearly influenced by Japanese prints.
