Van Gogh painted a number of large-scale pictures in the fields around Auvers, such as this wheatfield under thunderclouds. The bright green against deep blue gives palpable form to the tension before the breaking of the storm. Vincent wrote to his brother Theo that with these pictures of wheatfields he sought to express his misery and loneliness. But he also hoped to show that the countryside was ‘healthy and invigorating’ for him.
