Van Gogh began collecting Japanese prints in Antwerp. In his collection was a woodcut by Utagawa Hiroshige, after which he made a painted copy while in Paris. The scene of a bridge during a downpour is reproduced in brilliant colours. The characters are adapted from a variety of Japanese images. Similarly, he copied The courtesan after a print by the artist Eisen.
