Arriving in Provence in February 1888 Van Gogh was surprised to find snow on the ground. The early blossoming almond tree, however, had already produced its flowers, despite the cold. Van Gogh took this sprig back to his room to paint it. As a contrast to the soft colours of the glass and the blossoms, Van Gogh added a bright red line across the background, using the same colour for his signature.
