While in Arles, Van Gogh often concentrated for a time on a single subject: in the summer of 1888, for example, he made a series of paintings depicting the country harvest. He was quite pleased with this version - a panoramic landscape in sunny tones, dotted with the tiny figures of hard-working peasants. Van Gogh was not only interested in the landscape itself: he wanted to illustrate the life of the farm workers as well.
