Van Gogh here depicts himself as a gentleman, wearing a suit and felt hat. At the time of this portrait he had already been living in Paris for two years. During this period, his style had undergone dramatic changes. Like his French painter-friends, Van Gogh was now working with short brushstrokes in contrasting colours. Here, he gives this method - literally - his own twist, applying the touches of paint in a circle around his head.
